Memsaver memory optimizer vram saver Review

If you’re often working on large scenes and find yourself running out of VRAM, then Memsaver for Blender might just be the plugin for you. Memsaver is a memory optimizer for VRAM in Blender, meaning it will automatically optimize things like texture size and mesh density. I use it daily and it has been a real time saver, costing just $12 it’s hard to not recommend it.

What does Memsaver for Blender do?

To understand why Memsaver is so valuable we need to take a look at what it actually does and why. Memsaver Memory Optimizer Vram Saver (what a mouthful to say) will automatically optimzie the objects in your scene based on their size and distance to the camera. Let’s say you have placed 2 rocks with 8K textures in a scene, one in the foreground and one in the background. Chances are that the rock in the background doesn’t really need 8K textures because it’s small and barely visible.

This is where Memsaver steps in. It will calculate how big the objects will be in the render based on several factors, including render dimensions and camera distance. It will both reduce the texture size and do adaptive mesh decimation. Not only will it reduce VRAM usage, but it will also decrease your render times, it’s really a win-win scenario.

3 examples of memsaver in Blender

Adaptive mesh decimation

No reason to have 100 000 polygons on an object that’s far away from the camera. WIth adaptive mesh decimation, objects that are further away will become gradually decimated (reducing their poly count). For me personally this is a real time saver, knowing I don’t have to optimize every single object I create.

Adaptive image resizing

Just like the mesh decimation, the adaptive image resizing works based on how large the objects appear in the camera view. The closer an object is to the camera, the larger the image size. This means you could apply an 8K texture to an object and it would be downgraded to 4K, 2K or even 512 pixels the smaller it gets in the scene.

When it resizes images and textures, it does so in a smart way and stores them in the cache. This means you can still access your original 8K textures in their original folder. So if you’re not happy with the results you can easily revert back.

The texture resizing is also appicable to UDIMs.

Animation support

It also supports animation, I am not entirely sure how it works but it takes all frames into account when doing the calculation.

VRAM usage report

Another neat feature I like for big scenes in their VRAM report. It generates an HTML file that lists all the images and meshes and how much VRAM the consume. This makes it quick work to figure out what’s eating all the VRAM.

While not everyone has experienced maxing out their VRAM in Blender (yet at least), I am sure this issue will be more and more common as more free high quality assets are released and made available to the general Blender crowd.

And to add to that, it’s not like high end graphics card will become cheaper any time soon. So if you’re like me, you’re stuck with a graphics card that’s lacking the needed VRAM for your big scenes.

I’d say that for $12 it’s worth buying for everyone, because you will sooner or later reach a point where your scenes are so complex that you will need to start optimizing them in one way or another. Would you rather buy a new GPU for $1,600 or use $12 plugin? šŸ˜
